Rebuild & Retrofit – Lathes
Marathon specialized through the last couple of decades in CNC lathe retrofit and rebuild. We have a vast experience in rebuilding all kinds of Mori Seiki lathes, but we also retrofitted Mazak, Hitachi Seiki, Wasino, Warner & Swasey, etc. CNC lathes.
The scope of work we perform includes bedway grinding, hand scraping, ball screw replacement, spindle bearing replacement and CNC control retrofit.
In order to better demonstrate our rebuilding capabilities you will find some case studies of projects we performed in the past. They showcase both mechanic and electronic rebuild of machine tools, and illustrate FANUC and NCT control retrofit solutions. Our rebuild process adds features which were not available at the time of manufacture of the original machine and enhances machining performance!
MORI SEIKI SL-6B CNC LATHE WITH FANUC RETROFIT
This project involved the complete mechanical rebuild and electrical and control retrofit of this popular CNC lathe. The machine was basically taken apart completely, and rebuilt from the ground up. All the sliding ways were ground, new Turcite applied and hand scraped, ball screws rebuilt, spindle bearings replaced, etc. The machine received a new FANUC 0-iTD control package with new drives and motors.
Since the machine was completely disassembled all bearings, seals and other wear parts were replaced, the machine was completely rewired and new electric components installed. On this machine also spindle bearings were replaced, turret completely rebuilt and both ball screws were renewed. The machine has been retrofitted with new FANUC control, drives and motors thus enhancing machining capabilities and providing a new and long life for the future!
MAZAK POWERMASTER WITH NCT CONTROL RETROFIT
This POWERMASTER machine served long years in the pipe threading industry and was close to retirement when the customer decided to revive it again. The project included the complete disassembly of the machine, grinding the bed and slide ways, inserting and hand scraping new Turcite, rebuilding the turret and air chucks and retrofitting the machine with a new NCT control package, drives and motors.
This machine regained new life and better than original accuracies due to the rebuilding process. The new electronic installation with state-of-the-art new NCT control, drives and motors secured stable operating conditions for the machine and provided CNC capabilities that the original machine did not have. Due to new bearings, rebuilt ball screws and hydraulic supply unit the machine operated quite and fast just like a brand new machine would.
MORI SEIKI SL-603C CNC LATHE WITH FANUC RETROFIT
Marathon received this machine from our customer after a shop fire! Due to heat and smoke exposure all the cables and wires and other electronic parts were melted and the machine showed extensive rust damage. It was a daunting challenge to revive this machine and to put it back to original operating condition. The original Mori control was replaced with new FANUC 0-iTD control and all the original 220V Fanuc drives and motors were replaced with more economic 460V Fanuc package!
This machine has been virtually brought back from “dead”. All the damaged parts have been replaced and when the machine was ready our laser testing showed that it regained the original factory accuracies and was ready to thread oilfield pipes again for the customer! After 10 years of service and an almost fatal accident this Mori SL-603 started a new life thanks to Marathon’s daring rebuild and retrofit expertise!
